I found your blog while researching countries for the Fulbright Scholarship, and was hoping to get in touch with you and pick your brain a bit. I'm a deaf MS/MEd student at Idaho State University and am looking into studying deaf education in either Nepal, Sri Lanka, or Laos. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated! My email is bahundley@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Hi Franz,

Congratulations on your Fulbright Scholarship!  We just read and really enjoyed your article about Nepal.  In the summer of 2008, we shared a very similar experience connecting with the deaf community in Nepal - on a smaller scale, as we were only there for 6 weeks.

We run a (pending) non-profit organization called Discovering Deaf Worlds. Our mission is to advance the capacity of local deaf communities around the globe to meet their social, educational and employment needs.  We have visited eight countries and connected with over 100 deaf schools, organizations, clubs and worksites.  We are currently developing our first partnership program in India.  Please visit our website for more information: www.discoveringdeafworlds.com.  There is also a link to where we have been in Nepal:  www.discoveringdeafworlds.com/Countries/Nepal.html

During our visit to Nepal last summer, we connected with NFDH and GAD in Pokhara and discussed getting involved with their 8 Regions Project that is funded by The Deaf Way UK.  We are hoping to get back to Nepal this Winter/Spring to reconnect and potentially make a film about this project.

We would love to chat with you - to learn more about your time in Nepal, and see if we can't support each other in what we are doing.

Please contact us at info@discoveringdeafworlds.com when you have a chance.  Wish you all the best.

Namaste,

Dave Justice, Christy Smith & Davin Searls
The Discovering Deaf Worlds Team
